When do I collect my race pack and rack my bike?

You must collect your race pack on Friday the 22nd Sept from 17:00 to 22.00 at the Castlecomer Discovery Park in the main building beside the restaurant.

I can’t make it down to register on the Friday night. Can I register Saturday morning before the Race?

We would encourage all competitors to register early on the Friday evening from 17:00 – 22:00. However early morning registration will be available from 7:30am to 08:30. All bikes must be racked in the transition area by 08:30 and cleared of competitors 30mins before the Elite Route start at 09:00.

What type bike should I use?

The choice of bike is an individual choice. The most suitable bike would be a road bike with Gator Skin tyres (to avoid punctures) and least suitable would be a Mountain Bike. (A hybrid with road tyres would also suit). All cycle routes involve rolling hills with climbing and speedy descents so a well maintained bike that you are comfortable on is advised.  Your brakes and helmet will be checked on entrance to bike racking.

Do I need any specialist equipment?

Apart from the basics (bike, helmet, running shoes) you do not need any specialist equipment. A full list of mandatory equipment is available by checking Race Regulations and Mandatory Kit List.

Do I have to have any specialist map reading or mountain skill to compete in the race?

No. You will be provided with a map. The route is marked out with signs and race Marshalls will also be on hand along the route.

What is your refund policy?

When entering the event it is part of the terms and conditions that it is a non-refundable payment policy. There are no refunds as the cost is incurred the moment you register.

Is there any water available along the route?

You will be required to bring water with you on you for the duration of the race. There will be water available at the central Transition/bike racking point in the Discovery Park.

What time does my Race Start?

The Elite 78km starts at 09:00 (Race briefing 15mins before start)
The Sport 56km starts at 09:30 (Race briefing 15mins before start)
The Challenge 30km starts at 10:00 (Race briefing 15 mins before Start)

Will there be toilets at the Start/transition points?

Yes, apart from the Discovery Parks permanent toilet facilities we have Portaloos alongside the Start/transition area. There are no shower facilities.

Where must I rack my bike?

There are 3 separate bike rackings depending on the route you do. However they are all within the same general area close to the entrance of the Discovery Park. When you are registering on the Friday night you can proceed into the main car park where you will be directed to the nearby bike racking for your route.

You must leave your bike at the bike racking in the transition zone on Friday night between 18:00 – 22:00 in the Discovery Park. The bike will be placed on a secure bike racking system and will be monitored by security all night. You can leave your helmet, water, energy bars with your bike. All mandatory Kit must be brought to the start line.

The Expert and Sport Routes start with a cycle, how does that work?

The Elite /Sport starts are controlled, all cyclists will cross over the start line before being led out of the Park and up through the main street of Castlecomer where the control car will pull over and sound the starting hooter to start the clock and the Race! All competitors will be given the same start time.

How is the race timed?

Your race time and your progress through each stage are timed using a chip around your ankle. Results will be displayed on a big screen as you cross the line and for friends and supporters to read. Full results will be published online later on race day.

Can I compete in the race as a team?

Yes. Each route has a team entry available. We at the Coalface know some of us prefer cycling over running and vice versa so why not share the load and compete within a team! Team member numbers are limited to one per section (3 sections in the Challenge Event and 4 sections in the Sport and Elite events). Each Team must register together at the same time and for the same race. Remember to include the team name in registration details. A single race timer will be transferred from one team member in the transition area before that member sets off on the next race section. There is a Team prize.

Can I contact The Coalface Team if I have any more questions?

Feel free to contact us with any questions by emailing info@coalfacerace.ie or use the Facebook page for queries and updates.
